Yes, there are magical boxes either side which are required to make the celis tail light strips work. Pretty sure these are the Hella items; looks like the E39 had subtly difference tail light fittings when it was facelifted. Doesn&#039;t make much sense to me either!

It would appear they&#039;re only availabe as part of an &#039;official&#039; Hella retrofit kit but from the hammering mentioned in the article it sounds like these weren&#039;t those!
